UAW 4121 / UWRU Co-Co Bargaining Committee

The following UW Research Coordinators and Consultants have accepted nominations to serve on the Bargaining Committee. Working together, the Bargaining Committee will develop bargaining proposals based on survey data and conversations with fellow research coordinators/consultants, meet with UW management during bargaining sessions, communicate about the progress of bargaining, engage in outreach/organizing to build power, and mobilize to win demands.

Jessamy Johnson (she/her), Research Coordinator, Cardiology

I work at UW Medical Center in Montlake running several clinical trials for cardiac medications and devices. CoCos are essential employees who, among other responsibilities, translate cutting-edge research into real-life treatments for patients who may not have other options. I would happily convey the importance of the work we do to advocate for better conditions for fellow CoCos!

Karen Segar (she/her), Research Consultant, Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine

I currently manage data at the Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center and have also worked in the schools of public health and social work for over 20 years at UW. I look forward to CoCos having a seat at the table where we can shape our working conditions and get the rewards we deserve.

Chris Gallagher (he/him), Research Coordinator, Neurology

I work at HMC in Neurology, at the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center–as a senior certified clinical research coordinator I oversee a small team of junior coordinators and student research assistants, managing several clinical trials that provide life-saving investigational drug interventions to patients with rare, genetic illnesses. As a mentor and trainer to new coordinators, I am eager to advocate for their professional growth and career development at UW in the role of a bargaining team member.

Rachel Erstad (she/her), Research Coordinator, Social Sciences/Humanities

I work at the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies and previously worked as a union researcher and organizer. I have experience supporting bargaining and being a bargaining team member. I’d be honored to work with the bargaining team and all of you to fight for the best contract possible.

Karin Bauer (she/her), Research Consultant, Allergy and Infectious Diseases

I am the Lead Evaluator for the Infectious Diseases Education and Assessment (IDEA) program in Allergy and Infectious Diseases. I would be honored to work with the bargaining team to seek better transparency in university policies and advocate for improved conditions for my fellow CoCos.

Jessica Shanta (she/her), Research Coordinator, Oncology and Hematology

I work at Fred Hutch CC setting up clinical trials for the Head/Neck/Lung Onc & NeuroOnc disease groups. I am honored to work with the bargaining team and utilize my knowledge and skills in order to fight for the betterment of my fellow CoCos.

Melissa Fuller Becker (she/her), Research Consultant, School of Social Work

I’m a researcher at Partners for Our Children through the School of Social Work. In a previous role I was a union steward and represented my coworkers at the bargaining table. We are stronger together!

Tess Grover (she/her), Research Coordinator, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

I coordinate perinatal mental health and suicide prevention projects within Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. CoCos are the essential glue that holds together the components of every successful research team, and I’m excited to advocate for improvements to our working conditions.

Jared Bechtel (he/him), Research Coordinator, Rehab Medicine

I’m excited to represent my fellow researchers as we fight for a fair shake. Our work is critical in times like these, and our working conditions should reflect that.

Patrice Williams (she/they), Research Coordinator, School of Medicine, OBGYN

I am a Research Coordinator in the school of medicine OBGYN department. Unions allow us to be better and stronger together. I would be happy to support my colleagues and advocate for us all as a member of the CoCo bargaining team.

Iván Cruz (he/him), Research Scientist, Neurobiology and Biophysics

Iván Cruz is the Unit Chair for Research Scientists & Engineers and was a member of the RSE bargaining team. He studies hearing loss and hair cell regeneration in zebrafish in the Neurobiology & Biophysics department.

Having worked in multiple union and non-union jobs at the UW, I would be honored to bring this experience to champion for better working conditions for our bargaining group!
